From the Sierra Club Bulletin (1971):

Battlebooks are the Sierra Club's response to the most urgent needs in purposeful publishing today: substance and speed. Substance, because too often important issues are glossed over lightly, or relegated to footnote status in some unwieldy tome. Speed, because at the normal pace of book production , a crucial environmental issue can be lost before it is explained.
